“What can socialist poetry do in a seemingly apolitical world?”

Saturday 10th November at 1 pm in the New Beehive Inn, Westgate

A themed open mic slot; “Socialist verse - poetry for change or diatribe?”

It’s an open mic slot with a difference…anyone is free to comment on the theme or address a poem to the issues it raises.  Depending on numbers present, it may be a collage of opinion and poems, or a Wimbledon of opinion with views being batted back and forth.  The event is free and listeners, hecklers and other participants are welcome.  No need to book, just turn up!

Saturday 10th November at  5.30 pm at the Alhambra Studio

A reading by Adrian Mitchell, Andy Croft and Keith Armstrong (Click for a flyer!)

The readers reflect different aspects of socialist verse.  A description of Adrian Mitchell by the magazine Red Pepper as the “shadow poet laureate” reflects his standing in the socialist community.  He is always prepared to address “the issues” through poetry in a refreshing way that eschews the language of the media and political debate.

Andy Croft is a poet who works in schools and community writing projects on Teesside. He is editor of the Smokestack socialist press.

Folk Roots magazine description of Keith Armstrong as “a noted Geordie wordsmith, a bloke whose musings were always radical, though of their place”  tells less than half the story.  This troubadour poet has given voice throughout Europe to the working class culture of the North East.

Tickets £7.50/5.00 concs. from Bradford Theatres (01274 432000)

There will be a bookstall and poets will sign books in the interval.
